I have been just where you are right now.
I do not even know your particular story, yet I know we have a lot in common. I once was ruled by my food choices, obsessed with finding the perfect diet that would make me look, feel and function better, and sick and tired of feeling like I was failing.
In my 20’s my focus on diet was solely on weight loss. My weight would go up and I would prescribe to whatever diet promised me the quickest results and it would go down. And then it would go back up so I would try another. And another. And another. Name me a diet and I most likely tried it. My friends and family thought I was out of my mind. I took exercising to a whole other level and not only worked out intensely for 1-2 hours a day but taught group fitness classes for hours each evening after teaching elementary school. It gave me a sense of control. That landed me in therapy for body image disorder.
I thought all was good with my body until my endometriosis that had haunted me since I was 19 got worse, resulting in more surgeries and more hormones to keep it under control. My migraines needed medication, my acne needed medication, my anxiety needed medication and my IBS was a mystery no medication would solve. But I was skinny. And I could not get pregnant.
Sometimes God needs to really rock your world in order to steer your course in another direction. Infertility was that for me. My battle to gain control over my body led me to realize that there was so much more to being healthy than a perfect body on the outside. I began to learn the connections between what I put on and in my body and how it functioned. I learned about releasing my need for control over to God and trusting that my body could do more than I was being patient in allowing it to.
I was so blessed to become a mama to three amazing children. The first two were conceived through the advances of modern medicine and I will forever be grateful. When I conceived my third child naturally I was in shock. I was in shock that with changes in my diet and lifestyle my body had begun to function in a way it had not for years. I no longer had migraines, my cycles were regular and my IBS no longer ruled my days. Could I have reversed some of my medical issues if I had approached food differently in my younger years?
That question led me on a quest to learn everything I could about nourishing my body holistically, inside and out.
My early experiences with my health started me on a passionate journey of hope and healing. Overcoming infertility was only part of that journey. Balancing out my thyroid, battling anxiety and depression, learning to let go of dieting and listen to my body and what it told me I needed; that has all occurred for me over time, like the peeling away of layers of an onion. And at the core of it all was learning to love myself through God’s eyes and value who I was created to be.
Six years ago my nephew was born and shortly thereafter feel very ill. TO SEE HIS STORY CLICK HERE It left him brain damaged and his parents at a loss as to what to do to help him thrive. Watching my sister try every single therapy she could to help that little boy live his best life, including nourish him with nutrient rich foods, revealed even more to me the power of holistic health care and how doctors do not always have all of the answers. When he unexpectedly passed away shortly before his second birthday I made a decision then that it was time I took all that I had learned in my own transformation and use it to help others.
My road led me to Holistic Health Coaching.
This conviction led me to my schooling at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. With a BA in Psychology and an Ed.M. in Education, going to IIN was a natural culmination for me in combining my fascination with the human mind, my love for teaching with my passion for integrative nutrition.
